How to use the backup PIN?
Unlocking your Bold Smart Lock without a smartphone is easy with the unique backup PIN feature. Here is how you can set up and use your backup PIN to ensure you always have access to your lock, even when your phone is not available.
Enabling the backup PIN
Open the Bold app on your smartphone and navigate to the settings screen of your Bold Smart Lock.
Locate and select the option to enable the backup PIN feature.
You can create up to three different PIN codes for added flexibility. This can be useful if you want to give access to multiple people, for example employees, especially if they are not using smartphones. Keep in mind that PIN codes are designed as a backup method (not as fast as normal activation via the Bold app or the Clicker), but they work well when a smartphone is not available.
Select one of the PIN slots and create a personal 5-digit PIN code.
Note: After you set up the PIN, it will no longer be visible within the app. However, you can always change it later if necessary.
Once your PIN is created, you can opt to receive notifications whenever the PIN is used.
Please note: Enabling the backup PIN will make your lock not SKG*** compliant until you disable the PIN again.
Using the backup PIN
Start by turning the outside knob. You can begin by turning it either to the right or left, but make sure to alternate the direction after each digit.
Before entering your actual PIN, it is important to first turn a dummy digit. This helps to properly wake up the sensor. The lock always validates only the last 5 digits entered, so adding a fake digit in front ensures reliable detection.
For example, if your PIN is 45454, enter 445454 instead.
When entering the digits, make small turns of about a quarter (around 90 degrees). This is the sweet spot for the sensor. Larger turns are harder to track and may cause issues.
Enter the digits by turning the lock left and right as needed, with minimal pause between digits. In general, the PIN entry works best when performed quickly and smoothly, changing direction immediately without stopping.
After you finish entering the PIN, the lock will validate the input after 2 seconds of inactivity. If the PIN is correct, you will hear two short beeps, indicating that the lock has been activated. If the PIN is incorrect, you will hear one beep, and the lock will remain closed.
If the lock does not open, wait a few seconds before trying again.
Important tips
Memorise your PIN: Make sure you remember the PIN you set and share it only with trusted individuals.
Practice: Familiarise yourself with the PIN entry process, especially the need to alternate directions between digits, and short (quarter) inputs.
Troubleshooting
If you enter the wrong PIN and hear a single beep, double-check the PIN and try again.
If you encounter any issues or forget your PIN, you can use the Bold app to reset or change your PIN.
If the lock does not activate despite entering the correct PIN, it is possible that the PIN has not been saved on the lock yet. To ensure that the new data is communicated with the lock, simply activate the lock using the activation button on your smartphone. If activation doesn't work, you can enter PIN code '77777' to reboot the lock and try again.
Finally, remember that the backup PIN is a powerful tool to ensure you always have access to your Bold Smart Lock, even if your smartphone is unavailable. Keep it secure and use it wisely.
