# How to update the firmware?
## Firmware updates bring new features and improvements to your Bold Smart Lock. Stay up to date effortlessly with a few simple steps from your phone.
### Why firmware updates matter
The Bold Smart Lock regularly receives firmware updates to introduce new features and performance optimisations. These updates ensure that your device keeps running smoothly, securely, and in sync with the latest technology.
### When an update is available
You will receive a notification when a firmware update is ready. This will appear:
- On the home screen of the Bold app
- In the 'My devices' screen
### How to install the firmware update
You can install the update in two ways:
- Tap the update notification directly
- Or manually go to the lock’s settings:
1. Open the Bold app
2. Go to **Settings** of your lock
3. Tap **Device Information**
4. Select **Firmware**
5. Follow the instructions to install the update
**Important:** Stay close to your Bold product during the update and keep your phone screen active throughout the process.
### During the update
- Most updates take about **one minute** to complete
- Some updates consist of multiple components, this can cause the progress bar to restart at 0% (this is normal)
### If something goes wrong
If the update does not finish:
- **Do not delete** the product from your account
- Fully close the Bold app
- Reopen the app and **start the update again**
### One more thing about the flashing blue light…
If the light on your Bold Smart Lock flashes blue, it means you've held the button for around 30 seconds. This triggers a reboot, think of it like switching your phone off and back on. It doesn’t delete any settings or users. You’ll also see this blue flashing light during a firmware update.
### Final tip
Enjoy the latest features and improvements by always keeping your firmware up to date. It only takes a minute, but it keeps your security future-proof.
