Why does your Bold Smart Lock show 'battery status unknown' or 'calibrate'?

Get clarity on what to do when your lock shows 'battery status unknown', how to calibrate, and why syncing with the app is key after replacing the battery.

Why does the battery status show 'unknown' after replacing the battery?

You’ve just replaced the battery of your Bold Smart Lock after two years of reliable protection. Naturally, you expect the app to show a full battery icon right away. Instead, you see the message 'calibrate' in the Bold app and might also receive an email saying 'battery status unknown.'

This happens because, after changing the battery, your lock needs to calibrate and sync with the Bold app to correctly display the battery status. Until this is done, the app cannot confirm the battery level and shows 'unknown'.

What happens inside your lock after a battery change?

When you replace the battery:

  • Stamina Mode deactivates automatically.
This mode helps extend battery life when the battery runs low. After replacing the battery, your lock returns to its normal performance mode.

  • The battery status doesn't update instantly.
Without syncing, the lock can’t tell the app the new battery level, leading to the 'battery status unknown' message.

This is completely normal and easy to resolve.

How to calibrate and sync your Bold Smart Lock after replacing the battery

To refresh your lock's battery status and make sure everything works as expected, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Bold app.
Ensure your smartphone is connected to both the internet and Bluetooth.

  2. Manually activate the lock.
Tap the orange activation button in the Bold app. This step forces your lock to connect with the Bold server and update its status.

  3. Wait for the update to complete.
The battery status will refresh in the Bold app, usually within 24 hours.

Why calibration and regular syncing are essential

Calibration is more than just a technical step, it keeps your lock’s battery status accurate and ensures the lock remains in sync with the Bold app.

If you don’t regularly sync your lock (for example, if you rarely connect to it via the app or via Bold Connect), the lock won’t automatically report its battery status, and you may continue seeing 'battery status unknown' after a battery change.

Good to know:

  • Regular syncing prevents surprises.
Keep your lock updated by connecting to it via the Bold app at least once every few weeks.

  • Calibrating right after replacing the battery ensures optimal lock performance.
This keeps you informed about your battery level and avoids unnecessary battery status emails.

Closing

A quick calibration and regular syncing are all it takes to keep your Bold Smart Lock working smoothly and your battery status visible. If you follow these steps, your lock will stay connected, reliable, and ready for action, just like you expect from Bold.
