How-To: Reviewing and Correcting ChatGPT MyGPTs

This document explains how to review and correct a MyGPT’s instruction when its behavior or output is not as desired. Follow this procedure when someone in the team reports an issue, or when you notice the GPT is behaving incorrectly yourself.

Step 1: Open the MyGPT and Access the Instruction

  1. Open ChatGPT.

  2. In the MyGPTs list, click on the GPT you want to review.

  3. Once it opens, look at the top-left corner of the screen. You will see the GPT’s name.

  4. Click on the name and select “Edit GPT.”

  5. In the editing screen, locate the instruction field.

  6. Copy the entire instruction text.

Step 2: Open a New Chat with the “5 Thinking” Model

  1. Start a new ChatGPT conversation.

  2. Set the model to “5 Thinking.”

  3. Paste the copied instruction into the chat.

  4. Below that text, add the following prompt:

This is the instruction for a tool I have. Modify this instruction in XML form. Don't modify anything in this instruction that doesn't need to be modified for this modification. Modify only what's necessary, return it in XML format, and write it in English. Return this piece of text in a copyable field so I only have to press a button. This is wrong, and this needs to be changed:

Step 3: Describe the Problem Clearly

After the final line of that prompt (“This is wrong, and this needs to be changed:”), describe in clear terms what the GPT currently does wrong.

  • Explain the issue or incorrect behavior.

  • Give an example of how the GPT behaves incorrectly.

  • Describe what the GPT should do instead.

The more specific and concrete your explanation is, the better the “5 Thinking” model will be able to adjust the instruction correctly.

Step 4: Review and Reinsert the Updated Instruction

  1. The “5 Thinking” model will return a new XML-formatted instruction.

  2. Review it carefully to confirm that the correction matches your intended change.

  3. Copy the generated XML.

  4. Return to the MyGPT “Edit” page.

  5. Replace the existing instruction with the new XML version.

  6. Save the changes.

Step 5: Test the MyGPT

  1. Open the updated MyGPT.

  2. Test the scenario that caused the issue.

  3. Confirm that the unwanted behavior no longer occurs and that the GPT behaves as intended.

  4. If the problem persists, repeat the process with a clearer explanation of what should be changed.

Summary

Use this process when:

  • A MyGPT gives incorrect, irrelevant, or confusing responses.

  • The GPT’s tone, structure, or logic is not as expected.

  • You or a teammate report that a GPT is not performing as intended.

The goal of this process is to:

  • Identify the issue clearly.

  • Generate a corrected XML instruction.

  • Update and verify the GPT so it performs correctly again.
