How does Matter work with Bold?

Matter connects your Bold Smart Lock with leading smart home platforms for fast, secure and reliable control at home even when the internet drops.

Understanding Matter

Matter is a universal smart home standard that lets devices from different manufacturers work together seamlessly. It removes compatibility headaches by allowing your Bold Smart Lock to communicate directly with Matter certified platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings. This integration enables local control for quicker responses and keeps your lock secure and responsive even if your internet connection goes offline.

Technical certification and device role

Bold Elite is officially certified for Matter 1.4 and Thread 1.4. To optimise energy use, the lock operates as a Sleepy End Device. It spends most of its time in a low power state to preserve battery, then wakes instantly when it needs to communicate or perform an action. You can view the certification details here [https://csa-iot.org/csa_product/elite/].

Requirements, Matter over Thread

We utilise Matter over Thread. Thread is a low power, self healing mesh networking protocol that offers a more robust and responsive connection than Bluetooth or Wi Fi. Because the lock uses Thread, you need a compatible Thread Border Router in your home to bridge between Thread and your Wi Fi network. Common examples include Google Nest Hub second generation and Apple HomePod mini. Please note that Bold Connect is not a Thread Border Router and cannot be used for this purpose.

How to pair your lock

Before you begin, ensure your Bold Smart Lock runs the latest firmware. Generate your Matter pairing code in the Bold app within the device settings.

  1. Hold the button on the lock until the LED starts flashing purple. The lock is now in Matter pairing mode.

  2. Pairing mode stays active for three minutes, then the device returns to normal operation. During this window, Bluetooth control is temporarily disabled.

  3. Open your preferred smart home app, for example Apple Home or Google Home, choose to add a new device, then scan the QR code or enter the manual pairing code you generated.

Resetting an existing pairing

If the LED flashes purple three times then switches off when you try to enter pairing mode, the lock is already paired to a network. Reset the existing pairing before connecting to a new primary network. Press and hold the button on the lock for 30 seconds until the LED flashes blue. This clears the Matter pairing so you can start again.

Multi Admin support

You can connect your lock to up to five ecosystems at the same time, known as Matter fabrics. To add the lock to an additional ecosystem after the initial setup, do not press the physical button on the lock. Use the sharing feature in the smart home app you first paired with to generate a new pairing code for the secondary platform.

Battery life and power settings

Thread is efficient, although enabling it does reduce battery life. With Thread enabled, expected battery life is about two years compared to the standard three years. If you prioritise longevity, enable power save mode. In this mode, battery life with Thread enabled can extend to about five years.

Device status and sensors

How the lock reports status depends on your lock status setting. If enabled, the Matter interface shows the real physical status of the door. Locked means the door is mechanically locked, and Unlocked means it is not. If you disable lock status, the system reports activation state instead, where Active appears as unlocked and Not Active appears as locked. The lock also reports temperature, battery status and voltage to your smart home system.

Troubleshooting

If setup or operation is not working as expected, check the following.

  • Update the lock firmware to the latest version in the Bold app.

  • Reduce the distance between the lock and your Thread Border Router to improve signal quality.

  • Ensure IPv6 is enabled on your home router because Matter requires it.

  • Make sure your phone is on your home Wi Fi network and not using a VPN, which can block local discovery.

  • If pairing fails, reboot the lock by holding the button for 30 seconds until it flashes blue, then reboot your Thread Border Router.

  • If the lock still flashes purple three times when entering pairing mode even after a reboot, update to the latest firmware in the Bold app to refresh Matter certificates, then retry pairing.
